Scheduling notes for the 2012 schedule:

In addition to the standard schedule rotation policy that has been in use since 2002 (explained below), the following considerations were added when the NFL prepared the 2012 schedule:

- All NFL teams will play one game on Thursday in 2012

- No NFL teams will play more than 5 primetime games

- All NFL teams will play at least one primetime game

- All NFL teams will play opponents within their Division in Week 17

- No NFL teams will play a road game prior to a Thursday game

- No NFL teams will be required to travel from one coast to another prior to a Thursday game

- Flex Scheduling on Sunday’s begins in Week 11

Superbowl

The Superbowl (XLVII) will be played at in the Superdome in New Orleans, LA in February, 2013

Pro Bowl

The 2012 Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Travel Note regarding teams in the AFC West and NFC West:

Although it doesn’t affect the schedule rotation policy, THE NFL made an announcement in 2009 that in future years, teams will travel to either Kansas City and San Diego OR to Oakland and Denver when playing the entire AFC West, and to San Francisco and Arizona OR to Seattle and St. Louis when playing the entire NFC West. This does not affect the rotation of divisions or the games against like finishers within the conference, but can and does affect teams playing the AFC and NFC West in a given year.

== NFL Scheduling Format Explained ==

With the NFL expansion to 32 teams in 2002, the NFL realigned for the first time since 1970 into eight divisions of four teams each. A new scheduling formula was introduced

That guaranteed that all teams will play each other on a regular, rotating basis.

Under the NFL scheduling format, every team within a division plays 16 games during the regular season as follows:

* Home and away against its division opponents (6 games).
* The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games).
* The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games).
* Two Conference games based on the prior year's standings (2 games).

These games will match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference will be matched in the same way each year.

The schedule format takes each team through a cycle of home and away games against st every other team in the league.

In determining how to begin the divisional rotation in 2002, the displacement of teams from their old division in the new alignment was taken into account.

Preference was given to scheduling games with former division rivals and other regional opponents for clubs realigned from otherwise intact divisions.

Assuming the NFL continues forward into the 2012 season with this scheduling format (a safe assumption), some of the opponents for each NFL team for the 2012 season are already known and are shown above.
